Sportpesa
It should not be sung of, with this robin-hood theft, stealing from one group to give to the other. There is not much difference between a man who deals in drugs and gives back to the society in terms of proper hospitals and roads and uplifting the living standards of the people. It is akin to a rat that gnaws at the foot of man while blowing. There is not much pain during the biting process, but does it not exist after the rat is long gone? I shall stand in vehement dismissal, and castigate it in the strongest terms I have known, for it has been the single perpetrator of greed and shortcut among a youth who have been reduced to zombies, walking the road of luck and lack thereof. It ends either in triumph or the ropes. It has given life to our sports, thanks. It has given jobs, but oh, it has lined its pockets quite well. It has taken advantage of naivety and bad times, and robbed young men blind.
I shall send you back to the days of the great playwright and philosopher, Aristophanes.
“You demagogues are like the fishers for eels; in still waters they catch nothing, but if they thoroughly stir up the slime, their fishing is good; in the same way, it is only in troubled times that you line your pockets”
Every time I hear people singing of sportpesa and what it has done to our sports, I just shake my head. Human beings have a way of looking at reality from one side and blacking out another, taking a look at a lesser evil while the other side is slowly consuming them. Do you really see what it has done to your pockets, and to our youth? Do you see what it has done to good young men? They have never known hard work, but have put their lives on the edge, one brazen bet after another. When fifty shillings wins, they call in a hundred, which also wins, and they call a thousand, which might win, till greed takes over the reins, and rent money, food money, school fees is gone. Many a men have taken their lives, taken by greed, and imminent disappointment, surprised that a bet did not go their way. That is why it is called a bet, for it barely goes your way.
If I could have a way, I would stand up and drag the youth by the neck and drag them back to their senses, but if I did that right now, I would become the enemy, for a man who stands for a truth not much believed becomes the enemy of those who love the popular lie. So step by step, our youth are sinking, and since it all starts with one, I shall not say anything. Allow me to watch, as life whips people into shape. As some wise person said, “change is a door that can only be opened from the inside”
