Growing up
Growing up is basically about looking back at life and sighing at the fumes that are of the past, otherwise known as memories, looking back with fondness at moments that had otherwise been painful and torturous, missing what was and never will be. If life gives you that, then you are finally growing up. It is quite a slow and torturous process, where you weep over some stuff now and again, but if it reaches a point where you can look back and marvel, then that truly is growth indeed. Pain of the past is changed into something full of pleasure, and we get to marvel at moments that broke us in thousands. Well, it almost always takes time, but if someone is willing to hold on hard enough, time shall always get to vindicate them. Life is a very painful process, but as Sarah Teasdale says in the poem ‘It is forgotten’, time is a kind friend, and it will make us old. Since it is a must for us to age, why not seize the moments while we are young? Why pick scars from life when we can pick memories instead? While growing up, there are some things that will inevitably break us though. Of all those, words are the worst. Words can burn and bruise you. Some things people say can be like a knife to your chest, and you can feel the pain, knowing that whether you remove it or not, you are still going to die. Holding on jealously to the past too can be another source of an early and painful death. It is true, that the past can be the best thing that happened to someone but if finally you allow yourself to let go of the past that had been good to you, you open doors to the future that might be kinder, for whoever leaves a good thing as good as he found it will always get a better thing ahead, for he has passed a test, but whoever leaves it worse will never have a better opportunity again. The most important part of growing up though is knowing the kind of battles to fight and the kind to ignore. If you curl your fist at every opportunity then you’ll be stuck in the very situation till you get to learn to move on. Growing up is a complicated process, but if you have within you enough will then perhaps you shall allow yourself to move from one stage to the next. Growth can never be achieved at a particular time. It is a continuous process, and it ends only when one dies off, but in one way or another, we have to agree that it has with it plenty of pleasure growing up. It is great when one moves from being a small boy and into a man, from a child into a father, from a young adolescent and into an old man full of wisdom and experience.
